Regular Homestay, Half-Board Homestay and Roomstay
Staying in a Homestay in Canada will give you an excellent opportunity to practice your English conversation skills and experience Canadian culture and family life. Our Homestay families are located in areas of Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal, Canada, living from 40-60 minutes from the school; these homes are safe, secure, inspected and approved by our Homestay Program Coordinators.
Your Homestay family in Canada will be different from your own, so we ask that you be prepared to adjust to a new household routine, different foods and new rules. You will become one of the family! Please keep in mind that Canada has a very diverse cultural makeup with citizens with a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Our Homestay Department, Cultural Coordinators and staff will always be available to assist you whenever you have questions or want to talk. At ILSC-Montréal, you stay with an English or French-Canadian family - depending on your program. At ILSC-Toronto and ILSC-Vancouver you stay with an English-speaking family.
Duty of Family Members in Canada
Most Canadians work outside the home and are active in community affairs. Each family member has duties around the home and does many things for themselves. For example, family members are expected to take their own dishes from the dining room to the kitchen and take care of their own possessions; this will apply to you too! There will be many differences, both personal and cultural between you and your Homestay family in Canada. We ask both you and your new family to be accepting of these differences.
Your New Home in Montréal, Toronto or Vancouver Canada
Each family will assist you in learning the layout of your new home. You will be asked to respect the rules and regulations that pertain to their household. If any questions arise about your new home, please feel free to ask your family.
You will be provided with a clean, comfortable, private room. The room will be equipped with a desk, bed, dresser, closet and good lighting. You are expected to keep your own room neat and tidy.
You will have your own house key. Please respect the security of the household. Make sure you return the key when you leave.
Meals in Canada
You will receive healthy, adequate meals. You will try many different types of food. Please tell your family what you like and dislike.
| Note: please read accommodation type descriptions (top paragraph) to see which programs include which meals. |
| Breakfast |
A typical breakfast in Canada may include cereal, bacon, eggs, toast and jam, juice, tea or coffee. |
| Lunch |
Your family will provide you with food for your lunch. |
| Dinner |
Dinner will vary from family to family. |
| Snacks |
Feel free to help yourself to food between meals. |
Changing your Homestay Family
If you wish to move to another family, you must pay a Homestay Re-Placement Fee of $
100
(except if moving within the first 5 days of the homestay.)
Students who wish to leave their homestay before the scheduled homestay end date must give a minimum two weeks notice to the homestay family and the Homestay Department.
